Award-winning app for stem4

We were thrilled to hear of an award win for stem4, the charity we support on an ongoing basis.

The charity has developed an app called Calm Harm, which helps young people to manage the urge to self harm. The app is available as a free download.

It uses four categories of tasks target the main reasons for why people self harm:

  • Distract helps to combat the urge by learning self-control
  • Comfort helps to care rather than harm
  • Express helps get feelings out in a different way
  • Release provides safe alternatives to self-injury

The app uses ideas from an evidence-based therapy called DBT. The focus is to help users learn to identify and manage their ‘emotional’ mind with a positive impact. It is designed to work alongside other treatments rather than replace them.

The app, developed by Barnsley based digital agency HMA, won the award for Best App at the Northern Digital Awards.

It has been downloaded more than half a million times since being released. A huge well done to stem4 and HMA for a well-deserved win.
