Something very different for Diespeker was involvement with terrazzo for a sculpture that used a baby change unit.
The bespoke terrazzo was created using chunks of marble chosen by artist Nicole Wermers at the Diespeker premises in Bermondsey.
Ross Chalmers from Herald Street Gallery explains the thinking behind the concept:
“The sculpture by Nicole is from a series of works titled ‘Mood Boards’. The piece is made by simply casting traditional terrazzo into the fold out basin of a pre-purchased baby changing unit. Nicole is interested in the juxtaposition of the two types of design and their intended purposes.
The machine- made plastic form of the baby changing unit is designed to be as clean and sterile for its own purpose whereas the hand-produced traditional method of terrazzo flooring itself is designed to hide dirt through the mixing of different colours and shapes of stone whilst also looking beautiful at the same time.
The Diespeker team were very helpful and open to working with us on such a strange project in comparison to what I imagine they usually work with day to day, so it was much appreciated that we could work with John and the team on this. We look forward to working with them again as the results are fantastic and everyone was very accommodating to our needs.”
