Terrazzo is not a bombproof surface – here’s what you need to know before you make your choice

what you need to know

What you need to know before you choose terrazzo for your project

Is terrazzo durable? Absolutely. It’s one of the most hardwearing and beautiful surface materials available. Used for centuries in floors, tiles, cladding and worktops, terrazzo has proven itself in some of the toughest environments, from tube stations and schools to hospitals and shopping centres.

But while terrazzo is very durable, it isn’t bombproof. Whether you’re considering cement or resin terrazzo, understanding its natural characteristics and the potential for minor imperfections will help you make an informed decision and care for it properly.

Common terrazzo issues to be aware of

Like any natural or handmade material, terrazzo can develop small flaws over time. These are rarely serious and can usually be remediated, but it’s important to know what to expect:

• Cracks: Occasionally appear, especially in kitchen worktops, often caused by heavy knocks or impact from pans or utensils.
• Staining: Terrazzo can absorb liquids, so prompt cleaning is key. Acidic or oily spills may leave marks if not wiped away quickly.
• Pinholes: Tiny surface holes are a normal feature of some terrazzo finishes and usually barely visible.
• Weight-bearing considerations: As with any stone surface, the supporting structure must meet the correct specifications to prevent stress or damage.

With proper installation and routine terrazzo maintenance, these issues can be minimised, and your surface will last for decades.

NB resin (epoxy) terrazzo is generally considered more durable than cement-based terrazzo for most indoor applications, primarily due to its greater flexibility, resistance to cracking, and superior stain/chemical resistance.

How terrazzo compares to other materials

We don’t want to put anyone off terrazzo – far from it. Diespeker has been working with terrazzo for decades, and it remains one of our most popular materials for both residential and commercial projects. But it’s worth noting that every surface comes with its own set of challenges:

Wood: Susceptible to heat, scratching and staining

Laminate: Can warp, dent or scratch; also heat-sensitive

Marble: Prone to etching and staining from acidic spills

Limestone: Soft and easily marked or scratched

In short, there’s no such thing as a completely maintenance-free surface. It’s about choosing the material that best suits your lifestyle, the location and how it’s to be used, and expectations.

How to choose the right finish

When selecting a terrazzo finish, consider the following factors:

* Functionality: Will the area see heavy foot traffic, or is it prone to moisture? For wet areas, a honed finish is best.
* Aesthetics: Do you want a glossy, dramatic look, or is a matte, understated finish more suitable?
* Maintenance: Polished finishes require consistent cleaning to maintain their shine, while honed finishes need less attention.
* Safety: For outdoor or high-moisture areas, honed finishes offer better slip-resistance.

Terrazzo care and maintenance

If you’re happy to follow simple terrazzo maintenance guidelines, such as cleaning with pH-neutral products, avoiding abrasive tools and resealing periodically, terrazzo will reward you with long-lasting beauty and a truly unique aesthetic.

For those seeking maximum resistance to heat, staining and impact, terrazzo-look engineered stone or granite may be better suited. Diespeker stocks a wide range of both, offering the look of terrazzo with additional durability.

But for those drawn to the authentic, handcrafted appeal of real terrazzo, its individuality and charm are second to none.
