Remembering a diespeker legend

A fond farewell to Diespeker’s ‘grandad’

Everyone at Diespeker was devastated with the loss of one of our much-loved team members recently.

Dave Edwards had been with Diespeker for around 10 years. He started working in the terrazzo sector early on in his career, after a spell as a brickie. He often said that when he began working with terrazzo, a workmate told him: “If you’re still doing this in two weeks’ time, you‘ll be doing it forever.” And sure enough, he caught the terrazzo bug.

When he came to us, despite his extensive experience, he was a little nervous, perhaps due to starting with a new company later on in life. But he needn’t have worried. He soon became a valued member of our team. His biggest regret, he said, was not starting at the firm sooner. He loved it, the banter and the work.

He started in the legendary ‘Green Hut’ where our bespoke terrazzo is made and became firm friends with bespoke maestro Andy Brady. He went on to work on site, laying floors, doing the grinding and polishing, as well as the yard – his experience shone through whatever he was asked to do. Andy says that he always knew where everything was – if someone was looking for a particular screwdriver, Dave was the person who knew where it would be.

He was known by many nicknames, not all repeatable! But the favourites were ‘Old Boy’, ‘Old Dave’ (there also being a ‘Young Dave’ at Diespeker) and ‘Grandad’. The latter is particularly heartwarming, as Dave was something of a surrogate grandad to his colleagues’ kids. If they ever came to Diespeker, they would run to Dave, who would always make time for them. He was so adored by the youngsters that when Andy’s family were unable to attend his funeral as they were on holiday in Cornwall, his children wrote messages to Dave and sent them skyward from the beach in Chinese lanterns.

Our Factory Foreman, the aforementioned ‘Young Dave’, reminisced that Old Dave was a Chelsea fan. But then he revealed that at the funeral, which was attended by many Diespeker colleagues, he discovered to his shock that Dave also had a soft spot for Arsenal!

Originally from Yorkshire (although you couldn’t tell from his accent), Dave lived very local to Diespeker in Walworth. Sadly, he lost his wife earlier on, but his own children were still very much part of his life.

Nobody ever had a bad word to say about Dave. Old Dave, Old Boy, Grandad – you will be missed.
