Bold reception design with refinement and character

We ask Shoreditch-based client Minifie Architects about a recent refurbishment project that included Diespeker terrazzo.

What was the overall project at 16 Palace Street?

Minifie Architects were appointed to refurbish the ground floor reception and lobby areas, as well as to convert the existing Landsec offices into a business lounge and welcome area. The brief also included external works designed to reposition and enhance the building’s presence. This involved the introduction of a new entrance canopy, updated signage, and landscaping to improve biodiversity, aligning with the wider estate’s sustainability goals.

What were the design ideas for the reception space?

For the reception area, our design intent was to create a bold, monolithic aesthetic. To achieve a cohesive and unified look, we used the same Diespeker material on both the reception walls and the new reception desk. This consistent use of material helped to visually anchor the space and reinforce the overall design language. The reception refurbishment needed to align with the client’s wider plans and wellness aspirations. All the materials have been carefully considered to retain/ reuse or specify materials with traceable provenance.

You chose TE023, a smart black terrazzo. What did you particularly like about this terrazzo and how did it work within the wider design objectives?

The TE023 material brought a sense of refinement and character to the space, providing a striking yet elegant darker backdrop. It worked beautifully in contrast with the warmer tones introduced through the furniture and decorative elements, helping to create a balanced and welcoming atmosphere in the reception area.

Why did you choose to work with Diespeker for this project?

Minifie Architects has worked with Diespeker on several projects over the years, primarily for bespoke joinery elements. The project at 16 Palace Street presented a fantastic opportunity to use Diespeker on a larger scale, particularly to enhance key architectural features like the reception and lobby walls. Since then, we’ve continued to specify Diespeker across multiple projects, especially to highlight feature walls.

What was your experience of working with Diespeker on this occasion?

Working with Diespeker was a great experience. Communication throughout the process was excellent, and the installation was carried out efficiently and to a high standard. Minifie Architects has plans to use Diespeker again in future projects.
