We were delighted to see the impact of one of our terrazzo designs in a beautifully designed extension to a lower ground floor flat in West Hampstead.
London-based architects ConForm were tasked with reimagining the home, which struggled with low ceilings, dark spaces and little connectivity to the large garden. Key to the design was to extend the flat to make the most of the natural light and colours of the outside space.
The extension was developed as a contemporary canted bay, angled at the rear to lessen the visual impact on neighbouring properties, whilst evoking the characterful Victorian street scene.
The concept drew on the tri-sectional elements of a typical bay window using three different materials; the plinth in a concrete floor datum, roof plane in a textural clay toned plaster and columns in a green terrazzo.
For the terrazzo, ConForm requested samples and from these, chose TE030, a cement based terrazzo from our standard range, which is available in slab format at 3000 x 1200mm. This terrazzo offers a natural green base featuring chippings in shades of green and grey. The tones and texture of this particular terrazzo matched the brief perfectly.
The six columns, used internally and externally, were manufactured at our factory in South Bermondsey. The Diespeker team carried out a site survey to get all angles exactly right and sent drawings to the architects for approval before the terrazzo was put into production. From the site survey with drawings approved and production we supplied the terrazzo and delivered to site ready of installation in under three weeks.
ConForm added a large trapezoidal skylight to this rear living space, maintaining privacy from neighbouring buildings. The textural clay plaster by Clayworks, and Diespeker’s green terrazzo comes together with the concrete tiled plinth to envelop the space.
With the additions of the skylight and with sizeable windows looking over the garden, the home now benefits from plenty of natural light, offering a calm, welcoming space at one with the elements and its environment.
Ben Edgley, Director at ConForm, said: “Our work extends the living spaces out into the rear garden and introduces some of the detail and historical proportionality from the front façade. The pedimented roof plane is a textured datum with angular rooflight openings allowing light deep into the living spaces. Below, angled columns formed of stone contrast with the textured plane above that in turn sit on a terrazzo base which forms the lowered floor to the extension.”
