Which are the most popular types of marble?

There are many different types of marble that offer a huge variety of colours, distinct patterns and veining. When considering marble for your home or commercial project, where do you start and which are the most popular types of marble?

Perhaps the most popular are Carrara, Statuary, Calacatta, Emperador and Crema Marfil.

Carrara (MA003) is a classic Italian marble. It is a soft white/light grey marble with subtle veining. Carrara is one of the more affordable types of marble and is a popular choice for floors and worktops in the home, particularly the kitchen.

Varieties include Carrara Lithoverde (MA167) and Carrara Bianco Gioia (MA185).
Calacatta (MA178) also comes from Italy. It is a rarer, more expensive marble than Carrara. Design-wise it has a bright white background with dark, bold veining. Different varieties of Calacatta are Calacatta Vagli (MA141) and Calacatta Oro (MA091). This is a luxurious, statement marble.

Statuario (MA124) is another Italian marble. It’s a bright white with distinct gray or gold veining. Statuario has a striking look, exuding elegance.

Crema Marfil (MA056) is sourced in Alicante in Spain. It’s a warmer-toned creamy beige marble that provides a neutral surface that works well in both contemporary and heritage designs.

Emperador (MA046) is quarried in Southern Spain and offers rich brown and gold tones. It’s available in lighter and darker variations which suit a variety of interior designs.

Other popular types of marble

Thassos (MA049) is said to be the whitest marble in the world! It comes from the Greek island of Thassos in the Agean Sea. It’s a popular choice due to its versatility and durability; Thassos is a very hard type of marble so able to withstand a lot of use.

Connemara (MA117) is a rare Irish marble that is much sought after for its distinctive green shades. Due to its rarity it is on the more costly side but is an investment well worth making.

Saint Laurent (MA062) offers a darker option. From France, this coppery black marble has delicate brown, gold, and white veins.

Rosso Levanto (MA122) is a dramatic red marble that surged in popularity in 2024. A classic Italian marble that can be seen in many Italian churches, particularly in Rome. Another statement marble, it is ideal for floors or walls in bathrooms or wet rooms – and is a great choice for a kitchen worktop. Another popular red marble is Rosso Verona (MA043) which has more of a pinky-red hue.
